Liquid screed is a pump applied flooring material designed to produce smooth and level subfloors. It is supplied as a ready mixed slurry consisting of cement or calcium sulphate, sand, water, and performance additives.
Once poured onto the floor, the mixture spreads naturally across the surface and levels itself. Because it requires minimal manual finishing, it produces a consistent floor surface quickly. Many liquid screeds allow light foot traffic within 24–48 hours.
When should you choose liquid screed?
Liquid screed is commonly chosen when installation speed and finish quality are important.
Underfloor heating systems
The screed flows around heating pipes, improving heat transfer and helping the system perform efficiently.
Large floor areas
Pump applied screed can be installed quickly across large spaces while maintaining a consistent level surface.
Reduced screed depth
Liquid screed can often be installed thinner than traditional systems, helping where floor height is limited.
Projects with tight deadlines
Faster curing times allow other construction work to continue sooner.
High quality finish
Self levelling properties help produce a smooth floor suitable for many types of flooring.
Key benefits
Fast installation
Roughly 25m² of screed can be installed in about 20 minutes.
Lower shrinkage
Less shrinkage means fewer cracks and movement joints compared with traditional screed.
Better UFH performance
Heat transfer is improved because the screed surrounds heating pipes completely.
Similar overall project cost
Although materials may be slightly more expensive, labour savings often balance the final cost.
How it compares
Traditional screed is still useful where slopes or drainage falls are required, but it generally dries more slowly.
Self levelling compounds are normally used as thin smoothing layers rather than the main screed layer.
